Bengaluru man forces fianc© to take virginity test', harass her after wedding
Bengaluru: In 2011, a 31-year-old software engineer in Bengaluru was reportedly asked to undergo a virginity test by the man she was set to marry, so that he could assess her 'honour'. The woman, although humiliated, agreed to undergo the test, and was taken to a hospital by her two sister-in-laws. After passing the test, the couple was married.
Despite her passing the test, the man continued to be suspicious of her even after marriage. He repeatedly accused her of cheating on him and harassed her mentally.
After 5 years of torture, the woman finally filed a case of dowry harassment against him and her in-laws. According to the police, the couple got acquainted through a matrimonial website back in 2011. The man, a scientist, was pursuing his PhD at a university abroad and had come to India on a holiday when the two got engaged.
After their engagement, the man saw some pictures of his bride-to-be with her friends on Facebook, and insisted that she takes a virginity test. "I was shocked at first. I wanted to tell them that I was a virgin. But had I refused to take the test, they would have doubted me. And since I was engaged to him, I agreed to undergo the test," said the woman, who requested anonymity.
After the wedding took place in India, the couple moved abroad. However, little did the woman know that her husband's suspicions would grow day by day. "She has alleged that harassing her would give her husband some kind of sadistic pleasure. She has also alleged that her in-laws harassed her for dowry," a police officer investigating the case said.
"In such cases, there are clear directions from the Supreme Court to hear the version of those against whom allegations have been levelled. The final call will be taken only after statements of both the parties are recorded. We are contemplating counselling for the couple so that the wedding is not called off. The woman can still withdraw her complaint by approaching the court," the officer added.
