Chennai: Aided school warned for making kids clean sewer

Chennai: Administrators of government-aided school in Tambaram was warned by Kancheepuram revenue authorities on Saturday after a video went viral on social media in which school students were seen clearing sewer blocks.

The students clad in their briefs were filmed by the residents and were shared with the journalists inviting media attention. The same video was also sent to the district child welfare authorities seeking government attention.

Based on a public complaint Tambaram tahsildar Subbulakshmi rushed to the spot and conducted an inquiry with the Corley higher secondary school located in East Tambaram. “It is a fact that school authorities have forced the students to clear the sewer lines connecting drainage canal and a detailed report will be submitted to the Kancheepuram collector seeking action against school authorities”, tahsildar Subbulakshmi told DC.

“Over the years the government-aided school has earned good reputation among the public, but this incident is a mistake on our part and we have instructed our staff not to repeat such mistakes in future,” the school authorities told media urging them not to play up the issue as the only objective of the school was to serve the poor with education.
