A petition has been filed in the Madras high court to direct the police to register an FIR based on a complaint.

Chennai: A petition has been filed in the Madras high court to direct the police to register an FIR based on a complaint, alleging theft of idols, doors and other antiquities in the Ranganathaswamy temple in Srirangam.

Justice M.S. Ramesh before whom the petition filed by Rangarajan Narasimhan came up for hearing, directed the government pleader to get instructions and posted to March 2, further hearing of the case.

According to petitioner, he gave a complaint to the inspector of police, Srirangam police station on October 13, 2017, relating to the ex-facie theft of idols, doors and other antiquities in the Ranganathaswamy temple at Srirangam. However, the SI in charge had refused to register an FIR and no reasons were given for not registering the FIR. Therefore, on the same day, he sent a copy of the complaint through e-mail to the commissioner of police, Tiruchy, and also informed the refusal to register the FIR by the police. Since there was no response, he sent another reminder on October 27, 2017, to the commissioner of police. Thereafter, he personally visited the commissioner's office and handed over a copy of the complaint on November 3, 2017. However, there was neither any communication nor an FIR was registered till date. He came to know that by an order, the Madras high court has specially designated the inspector general of police to investigate the idol thefts in the state. Therefore, he filed the present petition, he added.
