No freebies, populist schemes in civic budget

The annual civic budgets of all 12 municipal corporations in the state will miss their usual fervour, a highly placed official source said.

Chennai: With no elected council in place, all municipal corporations in TN are to table a budget without freebies and populist schemes this year. In Chennai, the civic body usually tables its annual budget during the end of February, but this year it is delayed and will be a routine mathematical exercise. With no mayors and councils in power, the annual civic budgets of all 12 municipal corporations in the state will miss their usual fervour, a highly placed official source said.

People residing in all tier one cities of Tamil Nadu including Coimbatore, Madurai, Salem, Tiruchy, Tirunelveli, Erode, Tiruppur, Thanjavur, Vellore, and Dindigul can expect nothing major in the budget, explained another senior government official at the Secretariat. With the state undergoing a political crisis and the state exchequer reeling under a finance crunch, this year there will be no freebies and infrastructure projects from local bodies, he said.

All local bodies have started updating their revenue receipts and capital expenditure detail as they will be presenting their budget next month through special officers.
