Chennai: Aid for affected swells as parties, actors chip in

The party members should clearly demarcate the relief material meant for each district before the dispatch, they urged.

Chennai: Financial aid and relief material for the cyclone Gaja-hit families continued to pour in from several quarters. On Friday, the DMK dispatched trucks loaded with relief material worth over Rs 50 lakh while VCK chief Thol Thirumavalavan presented a cheque for Rs 10 lakh to Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami.

AIADMK coordinator and joint coordinator O. Panneerselvam and Mr. Palaniswami, respectively, have appealed to their party members to generously contribute to the affected families in the 12 districts. The party members should clearly demarcate the relief material meant for each district before the dispatch, they urged.

Film actor Vivek and representatives from Ramco Group and the Velammal Educational Trust too called on Mr. Palaniswami and handed over contributions for the relief work. Velammal group contributed Rs 1 crore.

While MNM founder Kamal Haasan who visited the cyclone-affected areas, initiated the distribution of relief material worth Rs 1.2 crores, veteran actor Rajinikanth has provided Rs 50 lakh towards the relief activities.

Srinivasan Services Trust (SST), the social arm of TVS Motor Company is also engaged in providing relief to Gaja-affected people in Nagapattinam district. It is distributing relief worth Rs 1 crore, including sleeping mats, bedsheets, tarpaulin sheets, lungis, and sarees. The TVS Motor Company has already contributed Rs 2 crore to the Chief Minister Relief Fund. Venu Srinivasan, Chairman and Managing Director of the Company called on Chief Minister Edapadi K. Palaniswamy at his residence here on November 20 and handed over a cheque for Rs 2 crore towards relief and restoration works in the Gaja -hit areas of Nagapattinam district.

Meanwhile, SRM Group of Institutions on Friday contributed Rs 1 crore to cyclone Gaja relief works. SRM Group founder T. R. Paarivendhar handed over a cheque to Mr. Palaniswami at the State Secretariat. All the teaching faculty and staff of SRM contributed one day's salary towards cyclone relief works. Also a 40-member student team of SRM went to the delta region to rescue people affected by the calamity and assist in relief works. The group has also offered Rs 60 lakh for providing basic amenities for the affected people.
