Waters rising! Kishkinda next?

Tungabhadra Board officials said the water level in the reservoir went up from just 16.72 tmc ft last Monday to 88.66 tmc ft on Sunday.

Ballari: The five centuries-old Purandaradasa Mantap at the world heritage site of Hampi was submerged as the Tungabhadra reservoir in Hosapete, that has filled up nearly to the brim for the second time since August in the recent heavy rain, released large quantities of water on Wednesday.

With the river in spate, the Kodandairama temple in Chakratheertha, which marks Lord Srirama’s visit to Kishkinda, is also expected to go under water in a day or two . Local priest, Ashwathnarayana said the statues of Lord Srirama could be submerged and the access to the Lord Yantroddaraka Anjaney temple, consecrated by saint Vyasaraja five centuries ago, was likely to be cut off by the floods.

Tungabhadra Board officials said the water level in the reservoir went up from just 16.72 tmc ft last Monday to 88.66 tmc ft on Sunday due to floods upstream of it in the Western Ghats. “We have never seen such heavy inflows into the dam in such a short period in the past. The inflow was 2,10,282 as against 74,539 cusecs on the same day last year,” board engineers said.
