805 NGOs in Karnataka lost registration in a year

According to sources, in last three years, 1,070 NGOs from the state have lost their registrations under the FCRA.

Bengaluru: The Union Home Ministry has cancelled registrations of several hundred non-governmental organisations (NGOs) from various states in last one year, for reported violation of Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA). According to the document, 805 NGOs in the state have lost their registrations and many government agencies too figure in the list.

According to sources, in last three years, 1,070 NGOs from the state have lost their registrations under the FCRA. “But in the year 2015, it was the highest (805),” said an officer from the state home department.

Why have they lost their registrations? According to sources, most of these NGOs existed only on the letter head. "Many of these NGOs were not even in existence. They were just there to receive foreign donations," they explained.

Many lost their registration because they had not submitted their annual returns. “Since the past two years, the functioning of several NGOs was being monitored closely,” they added.

However city-based human rights activists pointed out that majority of the organizations, which lost their registrations, either catered to minority communities or Dalit organisations. “Since the past two years new provisions were being imposed on NGOs working with the deprived classes. The list contains mostly NGOs headed by vulnerable groups,” an activist said on condition of anonymity.
