Students turn teachers as crunch hits schools in Khammam

A total of twenty-seven students are enrolled at the school from first standard to seventh.

Khammam: At an upper primary school in Kesappagudem under Aswaraopet mandal here, a class VI student has donned the role of a teacher.

A total of twenty-seven students are enrolled at the school — from first standard to seventh. But the school has no regular teacher an the classes are run by two vidya volunteers.

For the limited number of teachers, it has become extremely difficult to handle the classes and the syllabus. Which is why a young eleven-year-old boy is now teaching the first and second standards.

The situation in the Maddikonda primary school of Aswaraopet mandal was slightly different.

Here, there are 28 students in the primary school and two teachers. But, one teacher has been on long leave and the headmaster has been teaching all the five classes.

Angry residents from these two villages have now arrived at Khammam to infom higher officials about the negligence of the school’s administration in able to provide teachers. A parent, Madakam Komaraiah said the children are still showing an interest to go to school.

“The students themselves described the sad state of affairs at the schools. There are no teachers and the students are forced to make-do. We have asked the government to fill up the vacancies immediately before the children change their minds about going to school and getting a proper education,” he said.

Unfortunately for students from the region, a similar situation prevails across 32 schools in the district. There is an urgent need for teachers — to fill up the many vacancies but the government has not yet announced the forming of a district selection committee to recruit new teachers in the state.
