Chain snatching: Bengaluru police cover-up' for lapses

Cops' bright idea: Women should wear scarves to conceal jewellery.

Bengaluru: Chain snatchers prowling your area? No need to fret, the Bengaluru City Police has a 'golden' idea up its sleeve. The chain-snatching menace has proved nearly impossible to curb, despite the force increasing police patrolling and installing CCTV cameras across the city.

Offenders, despite being caught on camera, are very hard to nab. The West Division Police has hit upon a novel scheme, through which it will distribute scarves to women.

Around 2000 of these scarves, bearing the Bangalore City Police logo, will be distributed for free.

"We have noticed that these incidents are very common. Various methods were implemented but didn't deter the criminals. We are hearing of about two incidents a week," said a senior officer. The scarves, he explained, can be worn around the neck to cover a chain, if there is one.

"This will give no chance to a chain snatcher, who won't be able to tell if the woman is wearing a chain or not." That apart, patrolling has been increased in the West Division and anybody who witnesses or falls prey to a chain-snathcer can approach the police in total confidence.

"We are trying our very best to eradicate the menace," he added.
