No seat for Yeddyurappa son, confirms BJP; gives him youth post instead

BY Vijayendra was supposed to contest from Varuna constituency in Mysuru against Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's son Yatindra.

Bengaluru: The BJP has officially made it clear that the state party president BS Yeddyurappa's son will not contest from Varuna constituency in Mysuru with the announcement of a youth wing post for the minister's son, BY Vijayendra.

"Congratulations to BY Vijayendra on his appointment as State General Secretary, Yuva Morcha. His addition will greatly boost the party cadre and strengthen our organisation in the Old Mysuru region," the party announced according to an NDTV report.

BY Vijayendra was supposed to contest from Varuna constituency in Mysuru against Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's son Yatindra.

Vijayendra had been campaigning for weeks and even taken a house on rent there.

In a surprise announcement, Yeddyurappa on Monday said his son BY Vijayendra would not contest from Varuna constituency, triggering angry protests from party workers that led to a police lathicharge.

Bringing an end to what was expected to be a tough face-off between the sons of two state veterans, Yeddyurappa made the announcement at a meeting organised by the party at Nanjanagudu near Mysuru, just a day before the deadline for filing of nominations ends.

Soon after his announcement, angry BJP workers flung chairs and other furniture and raised slogans against party president Amit Shah and even tried to stop the cars of Vijayendra and other leaders as they were leaving.

They claimed that the decision would harm the party.

They also gave an ultimatum to the party leaders stating that the workers from the Mysuru region would resign and vote for the candidate fielded by rival Janata Dal Secular of HD Deve Gowda if Vijayendra was not allowed to contest.

Siddaramaiah, who has chosen neighbouring Chamundeshwari and Badami in north Karnataka to contest the May 12 assembly election, has been representing Varuna after it became a constituency in 2008 following delimitation.
