Guntur: Air conditioners and air coolers demand soar as heat increases

Day temperatures to rise by 2-4 degrees: IMD.

GUNTUR: With day temperatures breaching the 39-40 degree Celsius mark over the past few days in Guntur, the sales of fans, air coolers and air conditioners have also increased correspondingly. The meteorological department has warned of 2-4 degree increase in day temperatures this summer, which has led to the public purchasing coolers, fans and air conditioners frantically. Temperatures are set to cross the 39-40 degree mark in April, but this year, high temperatures have been registering in March itself, which has worried the public. Electronic shops and showrooms are displaying the latest models in air coolers and air conditioners to attract the public.

IMD director Y.K. Reddy stated that March to May, would be warmer than the previous years as waves are expected this year. He added that there are chances of the temperature touching 48 degrees and said that on a majority of the days it will hover around 43 degrees. Majority of the areas in Guntur were recently affected due to a diarrhoea outbreak which killed 18 people affecting as many as 2,000 people. Heat stroke or sun stroke as it is commonly called and heat rashes (prickly heat) are common illnesses in the summer. Heat stroke is also considered a medical emergency.

Electronic appliances’ showrooms in Jinnah Tower center, Patnam Bazaar, Market Center, Brodipeta, Arundelpeta, Kothapeta, Lakshmipuram, Chandramoulinagar, old Guntur and other areas had various types of ACs and air coolers on display. Modern air coolers with a remote and all sides swing is the main attraction this year.

Local S. Karimullah said that the temperature has already touched 40 degree and is 25 degrees in the night. They said that old people, women and children are facing troubles due to the increase in temperatures and hence they have purchased air coolers and air conditioners. Traders state that majority of the people prefer split ACs and swing air coolers and said that he is expecting business to be good this summer.
