Jats arrive in Uttar Pradesh, will take on BJP

The Jat leader said that his organisation was preparing to form teams to launch campaigns against BJP candidates.

Lucknow: Teams of Jat leaders form Haryana, Rajasthan, Delhi and Madhya Pradesh have started arriving in Uttar Pradesh to campaign against the BJP.

According to the national president of Akhil Bhartiya Jat Aarakshan Sangharsh Samiti, Yashpal Malik, “The teams will appeal to members of their community to vote for candidates that are in a position to defeat the BJP. We are not going to align with any political party and our purpose is to ensure the defeat of the BJP.” He said that the BJP had betrayed the Jats on the issue of reservation.

“Thirty people died in the Jat agitation in Haryana, of which 18 were Jats, and yet the government did little to provide reservation to the community. In this connection, cases have been registered against 25,000 Jats. The Jats voted en bloc for the BJP in 2014 but the party has betrayed us and we will now teach them a lesson,” he said.

The Jat leader said that his organisation was preparing to form teams to launch campaigns against BJP candidates. “There are at least 125 Assembly seats in UP where Jats are dominant and where they are can tilt the balance against the BJP,” he pointed out.

The BJP, sources said, had asked Union minister Sanjiv Baliyan and other Jat leaders in western UP to neutralise the community’s anger, but no visible steps have yet been taken in this regard.
