Official sources said six patients died of swine flu at the Kurnool general hospital over the past few days.

Anantapur: With two more people succumbing to swine flu at the general hospital in Kurnool city on Monday, the toll due to the dreaded disease has gone up to 10, and has set off alarm bells ringing across the region.

Official sources said six patients died of swine flu at the Kurnool general hospital over the past few days. On Monday, a pregnant woman and an elderly person succumbed to the disease at the special ward set up in the hospital.

Additional District Medical and Health Officer Dr Saraswathi Devi told this correspondent that 13 patients have been tested positive for swine flu in the hospital so far.

In the view of the rising number of cases, the district administration of Kurnool, Anantapur and Kadapa alerted the mandal-level staff to immediately initiate all possible measures to curb spread of the disease.

In addition to shifting of people with swine flu symptoms to district area hospitals, many patients are being referred to hospitals in Bengaluru and Bellary, sources say.
