Poor infrastructure affects new excise policy

As per the new policy, wine dealers should install CCTVs in belt shops and should have a connectivity with the excise headquarters.

Hyderabad: Lack of infrastructure with the prohibition and excise department is blocking the implementation of the new excise policy.

As per the new policy, wine dealers should install CCTVs in belt shops and should have a connectivity with the excise headquarters.

The excise department should either depend on telecom operators to get connectivity from CCTVs at wine shops or they should set up their own network.

An official from city police said that the traffic wing was depending on Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited for leased lines. “It is depending on BSNL at few places but the tariff of leased lines is expensive,” the official said.

D. Venkateswar Rao, Telangana State Wine Dealers’ Association president, said, “We are unable to generate invoices due to the poor connectivity and how can the deparment handle CCTV monitoring?” he said.

Dr R.V. Chandravadan, commissioner of the prohibition and excise, said that the department is already having the command control and is studying on CCTV connectivity.

“Monitoring wine shops will definitely lead to implementation of rules like not selling liquor to minors. We have CCTV connectivity from our depots to the command control. We shall adopt sophisticated technology for connecting wine shops across the state,” he said.
