Hyderabad: 120 lakes on the verge of annihilation

The causes of these incidents have most prominently been industrial pollution and urban pollution from sewage and dump yards.

Hyderabad: The fisheries department has prepared a list of 120 lakes which it deems to be most vulnerable to witness environmental disaster along the lines of the incidents recorded in tanks over the past few months.

The department plans to submit this to the Pollution Control Board (PCB), in order for it to begin conducting preliminary tests and initiate action to mitigate troublesome conditions before the occurrence of another mass-scale fish mortality.

Dr C. Suvarna, commissioner, fishieries, said, “At department level we do not have the facilities to look into the conditions of lakes. We are trying to get the PCB on board to closely monitor all vulnerable tanks across the state.”

This year, the department has experienced a major setback with over six cases of fish mortality being reported in the past month — highest from the Edulabad lake. The causes of these incidents have most prominently been industrial pollution and urban pollution from sewage and dump yards, and this has forced the department to seek assistance from the PCB.
