Jayanagar Metro: Motorists on slow track

Right opposite the plush Central Mall and the arch of Ragiguda temple, the roads are in a dilapidated condition, resulting in huge traffic gridlocks.

Bengaluru: After the metro construction took off in Jayanagar Block 9 early this year, the residents thought that temporary inconvenience would lead to long term benefits.

However the condition of the portion of the street that now remain for commuters are in pathetic shape and the footpaths have become non-existent and this causes inconvenience to lakhs of commuters and pedestrians.

Right opposite the plush Central Mall and the arch of Ragiguda temple, the roads are in a dilapidated condition, resulting in huge traffic gridlocks.

“We need Metro and there is no complaint against it, but at least the narrow lane that has been left for vehicles should be repaired so that we can move freely. The trees have been chopped and this is the only green area of the city as per my knowledge,” said Ashwin Singh, a local resident.

He further added that the government should have taken precautions before going ahead with the project. “Due to huge traffic congestion, most commuters heading towards Kanakapura take diversion through JP Nagar and it has led to traffic congestion there.”

The narrow lane that is left after the Metro construction took off serves office goers and shoppers.

The commuters are also worried about the roads in the BTM Layout as the metro will soon commence its work there.

The government has already directed the BBMP to address complaints regarding potholes on a war footing.

“The narrow lane caters to the huge BMTC buses and during morning and evening, it gets difficult to navigate due to the congestion. Of course, the development work is welcome but the roads should also be repaired so that there is a smooth run of vehicles,” said Abhijeet Kumar, a daily commuter.

‘Roads will be repaired soon’

Q&A With Bengaluru Mayor Sampath Raj

Roads in Jayanagar 9 Block are in a pathetic condition after the Metro construction started. What is the administration doing?
I inspected the area on July 21 and directed the BBMP joint commissioner and traffic officials to take care of it. The Metro has been requested to remove the boulders from the road and they have agreed. The roads will be repaired soon.

The residents have told me about the issue, which is why I visited the area and took stock of the situation.

The wards were supposed to receive Rs 10 lakh each and they are still waiting for it.

The fund allocation to wards was delayed in the budget. We hope to allocate it on Monday.

Activists have raised objection to the axing of trees in Jayanagar. Will the trees be translocated?
The trees eligible for translocation will be translocated. Jayanagar will not lose its green cover.
