Chennai: DMK leader charges min with misuse of money

He said the as per norms these fund would be utilized only for drinking water augmentation and laying of road in panchayats.

Chennai: DMK leader and former Radhapuram legislator M. Appavu has filed a complaint against Minister for Municipal Administration, Rural Development S.P. Velumani on charge of committing irregularities to the tune of Rs 1811 crore in setting up of LED bulbs and earth wiring in Panchayats in the state.

Appavu submitted a complaint to the Chief Secretary on Wednesday seeking action against the minister and other officials involved in the scam. He also sent compliant to Governor, DVAC, and other authorities.

Speaking to mediapersons Appavu said that the government had decided to purchase 20-W LED streetlights for 12,524 panchayats in the state. A total of 23,04820 lamps including 1 lakh sodium lamp, 5.30 lakh CFL bulbs, were purchased. The government had taken the decision only to reduce the consumption of power by the local bodies.

A huge allotted in 2015, 2017 and in 2018 under pooled assigned revenue under 14th Finance Commission grant, State Finance Grant and District Panchayat fund for procurement of LED bulbs and earth wiring in panchayats.

He said the as per norms these fund would be utilized only for drinking water augmentation and laying of road in panchayats. Violating the norms the government allotted the fund and purchased the LED bulbs and earth wiring.

As per direction of the Minister, the authorities including district collectors and senior officials committed irregularities to the tune of Rs 1811 crore. Hence, he sought action against the minister and other officials involved in the scam.
