Puducherry health dept on high alert for Nipah

A high-level meeting was conducted at Mahe to discuss the recent outbreak of the virus.

Puducherry: Puducherry health department is on high alert following the outbreak of dangerous virus Nipah, which claimed seven lives in Kerala’s coastal city of Kozhikode, 60 kilometres from Mahe region of the Union Territory.

A high-level meeting was conducted at Mahe to discuss the recent outbreak of the virus. The health department had decided to conduct meeting at various wards and high risk areas and to conduct fever surveillance by public health team. Rapid response team was formed in order to respond to any suspected cases and awareness would be created using social media platforms, distributing pamphlets and notices.

The staff at the government general hospital was provided with masks and gloves while on duty.

“The government of Puducherry had taken due precautions for Mahe against the spread of the virus,” said Lt Governor Kiran Bedi in a WhatsApp message.

“People from Mahe used to visit Kozhikode on a daily basis for various reasons so we could not avoid the possibility of the spread of Nipah virus. Thus the department is on high alert and have taken all possible precautions, So far no suspected cases has been reported,” said a senior official from the health department.
