Perungalathur housing project gets NGT nod

Green Tribunal gives green signal as builder carries out all recommendations.

Chennai: The Principal Bench of National Green Tribunal, New Delhi, has given its nod to SSM Builders and Promoters to resume construction of its '720 crore housing project in Perungalathur and complete it as per law.

In the petition, the builders had sought permission to start construction and complete the housing project. The work was started before obtaining Environmental Clearance from State Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA), Tamil Nadu.

When the matter came up for hearing in April last year, the Principal Bench headed by its Chairperson, Justice Swatanter Kumar directed the builder to pay Rs 36 crore.

The bench also appointed a high power committee to inspect the premises and make recommendations in relation to various aspects, which are covered under the Environment Clearance.

The committee in December last year recommended certain measures to be taken for permitting the project to be completed in accordance with law.

Meanwhile, the builder paid the amount and SEIAA granted Environmental Clearance. The builder had assured it will comply with all terms and conditions mentioned in Environmental Clearance and any other additional conditions as may be imposed by the Tribunal.

The builder sought direction to continue with construction activities of the project and complete it soon. The Bench said, “Since the project proponent has satisfied the basic directions issued by the tribunal and has also received the order granting Environmental Clearance, we permit the builder to continue with the project work and complete the same in accordance with law”.
