Vadapalani bus terminus water tank to be renovated

During monsoons, it is a nightmare as the rainwater seeps in and the cement from the tank keeps chipping.

Chennai: The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) crew at Vadapalani bus terminus finally heaved a sigh of relief on Saturday as the regional manager of the depot issued instructions to renovate the dilapidated tank of the washroom that developed cracks.

The move was initiated after Deccan Chronicle unveiled the poor plight of the structure. “The depot is built way back in 1965 and was never renovated. Every year, the officials would only paint the walls and leave them to crack the rest of the year. During monsoons, it is a nightmare as the rainwater seeps in and the cement from the tank keeps chipping. Repairing the tank would mean regular water supply to washrooms,” said a conductor at the depot.

The regional manager said the work would be completed within the coming week. Sources from the department said the transport secretary had asked the officials from each depot across Tamil Nadu to submit a report on the state of the buildings to work on them.

Almost all bus depots in the city started operations only at 6.30 am on Saturday as against the usual time of 4.30 am. The delay was because the crew paid last respects to the eight deceased who lost their lives in the roof collapse at Porayur.
