March against liquor policy on Monday

The march would begin from the Museum compound at 10.30 a.m. and end in front of the secretariat.

Thiruvananthapuram: The prohibition council headed by Archbishop M. Soosa Pakiam and former KPCC president V. M. Sudheeran will hold a secretariat march on Monday against the liquor policy of the state government. The march would begin from the Museum compound at 10.30 a.m. and end in front of the secretariat.

Spiritual leaders belonging to various religions and social and cultural activists would take part in the march which is a follow-up of the satyagraha organised in front of the secretariat on September 26.

The government had claimed that after the closure of bars the consumption of liquor had gone up. However, during the three years from April 1, 2014 to March 31, 2017, the sale of foreign liquor had actually gone down by 8,65,60876 litres, said the council.

Though the consumption of beer and wine increased during the period, there was a reduction of 34.7 percent in other alcohol drinks.

There was also a reduction of 7.47 percent in the sales volume of alcohol. The government’s claim that the tourism industry took a hit because of the closure of liquor shop was also wrong as per statistics available with the tourism department.
