Hyderabad: HMDA gears up for debris removal

It has earmarked Rs 26 lakh and deployed machinery for debris removal.

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) has geared up for debris removal from Hussainsagar lake immediately after the immersion of idols. The municipal authority has set a deadline of seven days to remove debris completely after the immersion day on September 23. It has earmarked Rs 26 lakh and deployed machinery for debris removal.

HMDA chief engineer B.L.N. Reddy said it had already taken up a special drive at an estimated cost of Rs 26.25 lakh as part of making arrangements for a hassle-free immersion of Ganesh idols at the lake. He said that the HMDA would press an amphibious excavator, two dredge utility crafts and trash collector into service. Mr Reddy added that HMDA had procured two trash collectors in addition to the existing one. Each trash collector is expected to cost nearly Rs 2 crore and they would be procured in a couple of months.

During last year, about 60,000 idols were reported to have been immersed in the lake. After the 11-day festivities, the HMDA had cleared 4,716 metric tonnes of Ganesh idol remains and other puja material from the lake. The debris was shifted to the GHMC garbage transfer station at Lower Tank Bund. All the post-immersion cleaning was completed in seven days, besides picking up trash during the 11 days of festivities.
