Central team visits Kozhikode, gather details of disaster

Central teams also visited Kannur and Wayanad to assess the magnitude of the rain havoc.

KOZHIKODE: A four-member central team reached the district to assess the magnitude of the rain havoc that rocked the region, on Friday. The team visited the landslide-hit Karincholamala in Kannappankundu, the stretch of the National Highway 766, in the Thamarassery Ghats connecting Kozhikode with Bangalore which was washed off due to torrential rains and also the landslide-hit Chippilithode.

The team includes Dr B. Rejendar, joint secretary (Ministry of agriculture, cooperation and farmers welfare), Vandana Singhal, chief engineer, ministry of power, Dharamveer Jha, secretary, ministry of rural development, Ponnu Swami, department of agriculture. Hazard analyst G. Pradeep also is accompanying the team. District collector U.V. Jose explained to the team about the magnitude of the calamity that struck the district, the quantum of loss to various sectors and details of causality.

Deputy collector V. Vigneswari, K. Ramla (disaster management wing) and tahsildar K.T. Subramanyan among others accompanied the team. Central teams also visited Kannur and Wayanad to assess the magnitude of the rain havoc.

The central team also interacted with few people living in the area and also collected information from various departments on the loss suffered by agriculture, animal husbandry, industry and trade. Many people living in the landslide prone zones are still afraid to live in homes. Majority of those who had to live in relief camps feel that if torrential rains continue to lash in the final phase of the monsoon they will have to undergo the same ordeal, it was pointed out.
