Heavy rains forecast for North Karnataka

According to IMD Bengaluru city is expected to receive moderate rainfall from September 22 to September 26.

BENGALURU: The regional office of Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) at Bengaluru has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in North Karnataka regions and some parts of South Karnataka for the next five days.

According to IMD Bengaluru city is expected to receive moderate rainfall from September 22 to September 26. But the department said that city is expected to get heavy rainfall in the month of October as the North East Monsoon is expected to pick up in the mid of October.

Dr Geetha Agnihotri, Head of Observations, India Meteorological Department, told Deccan Chronicle, “Bengaluru city which was supposed to receive heavy rains in the month of September is having a deficit. For the next 5 days, the rainfall for the city will be very moderate with one or two spells of rain.”

She observed that the city normally receives maximum rainfall in September and October. Dr Geetha said “We predicted the lower pressure area formed over the Bay to Bengal to bring rains to the city. But the rain has not picked up in the month of September, so Bengaluru is likely to get only moderate rainfall,” she said.

The annual average rainfall for the city from Jan 1 till date is 98 cm, where it has recorded only 70 cm of rain, Dr Geetha said. We are expecting the North-East monsoon to catch up from mid-October and bring heavy rains to the city, she added.
