Make donations only through cheques: H D Kumaraswamy

Mr Kumaraswamy revealed that so far seven deaths had been confirmed in the district and four people were missing.

Bengaluru: Seeing a large number of organisations raising funds for Kodagu, which has been devastated by floods and landslides, Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy has appealed to people not to donate in cash for the victims of the disaster. Speaking to reporters here on Tuesday, Mr Kumaraswamy said there were reports of some unscrupulous elements raising funds in the guise of providing relief to the people of Kodagu and pocketing it themselves.

“If anyone wants to donate cash to provide relief to Kodagu, a counter has been opened in the Chief Minister's home office, where they will receive a receipt on giving a cheque. People can also transfer money online to the official account opened for relief work,” he said.

Mr Kumaraswamy revealed that so far seven deaths had been confirmed in the district and four people were missing. “If the media has any more information about more missing people it should bring it to the attention of the authorities concerned,” he pleaded. As abandoned and isolated houses were being looted by miscreants following the landslides, the superintendent of police had been directed to post policemen or home guards near abandoned houses to protect properties, and at least one home guard would now be posted at such houses even in remote areas, he assured.
