Somasundarapalya lake to get fresh lease of life

BBMP sanctions Rs 4crore for revive the water body .

Bengaluru: The residents at Somasundarapalya have been on warpath as the government has not fulfilled its promise of shutting down the Karnataka Compost Development Corporation (KCDC) plant.

The continuous inflow of sewage into the Somasundarapalya Lake and the waste from the KCDC plant has brought down its Water Quality Index (WQI) to unsatisfactory.

Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) has classified this lake as Class E, the lowest category, and it has remained so for the past one year.

According to BBMP sources, Rs 4 crore has been allotted for rejuvenation of the lake and the work has been initiated.

“We are thinking of forming a lake monitoring committee as well. As per my information the Detailed Project Report (DPR) has been prepared. The work is on and at present the lake is being emptied for the rejuvenation,” said

Kamesh Rastogi, member of Kudlu, Haralukunte, Hosapalya, Somsundarapalya and Parangipalya (KHHSP) Resident Welfare Association

In the recent data released by the KSPCB, not a single lake in the city had satisfactory WQI.

Though the residents pointed out that though the local MLA had claimed there has been a decline in the number of waste laden trucks coming to the processing plant, they said continues to be engulfed by stench.

“There is no scope for us to verify the details since the access to the plant is denied. But I would say that despite the promises being made by the MLA Satish Reddy and MP Rajeev Chandrsekhar, no change on the ground has taken place since the MLA did not take up this issue in assembly,” he added.

The highly inflammable Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) stored in the plant is also a cause for concern among local residents, as there have been fire accidents in the past.

According to the residents the RDF is getting transported off on a daily basis.
