The IT capital will soon have a school of economics, on the lines of the famed London School of Economics.

BENGALURU: The IT capital will soon have a school of economics, on the lines of the famed London School of Economics, named after the late Dr B R Ambedkar on the campus of Bengaluru University by next academic year, higher education minister Basavaraj Raya Reddy said on Thursday.

A committee headed by a former chief secretary and vice chairman of state higher education council, S V Ranganath, has been asked to submit a report within a fortnight on the contours and curriculum of the school of economics which would be named after the architect of India's Constitution to mark his 125th birth anniversary. The institute would be autonomous, but funded by the social welfare department, he added.

He said the state government took a decision to set up the institute with funds from social welfare department as the Jindal Group, which originally offered to establish Dr. Sitaram Jindal School of Economics, backed off.

With regard to the IIT at Dharwad, the minister said the state government had issued an order for handing over 470 acres to higher education department in Kalageri village in Dharwad district.
