Tamil Nadu asked to take advantage of Make in India' scheme

Promote industries as drivers of growth: Suresh Prabhu

Chennai: Asserting that new industries will be the future drivers of growth in the country, Union commerce & industry and civil aviation minister Suresh Prabhu called upon states, particularly Tamil Nadu to partner with the Central government to promote industrial growth by taking advantage of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Make In India programme.

“We have already decided to work with states as partners of developing industries. India can achieve growth if the existing industries are modernised and new industrial units, which could create huge jobs, are encouraged,” Mr Suresh Prabhu said. He was speaking at the inaugural of India’s premier international machine tools exhibition ACMEE 2018 held under the aegis of the Ambattur Industrial Estate Manufacturers Association (AIEMA) at the Chennai Trade Centre here on Thursday.

Artificial intelligence, robotics and 3D printing would redefine manufacturing and pave way for new industrial revolution. The Minister said new industries would be the future drivers of growth and “if we lag behind then we will miss out the opportunity.” “The Prime Minister’s Make in India Programme is meant to scale up our capabilities and bring new drive in industries,” he said and admitted that acquiring land for industrial units is becoming a problem everywhere across the country. “Therefore, we are creating new industrial estates with world-class infrastructure so that industries could perform better,” he said.

“Tamil Nadu is already a leader in industries and is known all over India as among the few States with ability to deliver good infrastructure. I remember in those days when late J. Jayalalithaa was the Chief Minister she used to encourage automobile industries and she brought new ideas into the industry,” he said and added that Tamil Nadu could be more developed if it partnered with the Centre and utilised PM’s Make in India Programme.

Whenever he went abroad to promote the Indian industrial climate in foreign nations, he expected the states too to join him in furthering their interest. “I want to take the States with me because when industries invest in India they would also be investing in the states. So you should participate and benefit,” he said.

Under the Make in India initiative Prime Minister Narendra Modi created new rules wherein whatever is made in the country under this scheme must be bought in India as a minimum purchase by the government.

Union min discusses ‘start-up’ policy with CM
Union Commerce & Industry and Civil Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu has advocated a ‘start-up’ policy for Tamil Nadu, similar to the start-up India initiative of the Narendra Modi-led BJP government at the Centre.

The Minister who was in the city on Thursday to participate in the fourth International Yoga Day and also inauguration of India’s premier international machine tools exhibition ACMEE 2018 held under the aegis of the Ambattur Industrial Estate Manufacturers Association (AIEMA) at the Chennai Trade Centre here, called on Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami and had a brief interaction with him.

“I had also discussed with the Chief Minister to roll out a start-up policy for Tamil Nadu. This start-up policy will be a good thing because, start-up can create new jobs,” he said. Speaking to reporters Mr. Suresh Prabhu said, “I discussed with the Chief Minister to start a second big airport for Chennai on a few hundred acres of land. So many towns are still not connected…we are trying to find out how we can provide regional connectivity. So, we are working on a comprehensive strategy and for that connectivity is a very important thing,” the Minister said.
