GUNTUR: A metal sculpture of an athlete, made from waste iron, and installed in Acharya Nagarjuna University at Nambur in Guntur district is attracting public.
The 18-feet sculpture, weighing 2,000 kg, depicts an athlete holding a javelin and was made from automobile scrap. As this is the first of its kind sculpture, ANU is planning to apply for a slot in the Guinness Book of World Records.
Automobile scrap of 500 cycle wheels, 650 shock absorber springs from motorcycles, 450 bike chains, 350 gear boxes of two wheelers, 350 cycle crank wheels, 150 bearings, 75 clutch plates and other waste were used for the sculpture. The art piece made from scrap has been installed at the crossroads near the physical education department on ANU campus. It was made by students of architecture.
Mr Rao was involved in making sculptures from waste in the municipal corporations of Vijayawada and Tirunelveli. The ANU officials saw his work in Dec., 2016 and asked him do one for ANU. The project took one month and costed Rs 2 lakh. The students said the sculpture resembled the lead character of Hollywood movie Avatar when seen from a distance.
