Chennai to receive heavy to very heavy rains

Fishermen have been asked not to venture into the sea unless instructed otherwise.

Chennai: The Indian Meteorological Department on Tuesday said that the rain would pick up the pace by Tuesday night, putting an end to the extended dry spell in the city. Cloudy skies and strong winds were accompanied by short spells in T Nagar, Aminijikarai, and other areas in the city and around the suburbs, they have said.

S.Balachandran, Deputy Director General of Meteorology, Chennai, said rains would first hit the coastal areas and then spread to interior districts. “A well-marked low pressure now lies over the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining northeast Sri Lanka. It is likely to concentrate into a depression in the next 24 hours along the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry,” he said, adding that moderate rainfall would be experienced along those areas, while some scattered areas could get heavy to very heavy rainfall. Chennai would get rain up to 6 cm and if the system moves northwards, there is a chance for an increase in rain, he said.

While the State is expected to get moderate spells till Wednesday, some places in Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Pudukottai, Nagapattinam and Cuddalore may experience heavy to very heavy rainfall till Tuesday morning. There are chances of heavy rainfall in some areas on Wednesday too. Fishermen have been asked not to venture into the sea unless instructed otherwise.

Meanwhile, whether bloggers have said that this rainfall would be favourable to the northern districts, including Chennai which has been rain-starved.

“The depression is expected to move in West-North Westerly direction which means northern areas of the depression will have clouds, so this time North TN cannot miss this spell. There is going to be some serious rains Chennai can expect heavy rains from Tuesday night to Wednesday morning,”said Pradeep John, better known as Tamil Nadu Weatherman, in his blog.
