Bengaluru: The Mines and Geology Department has sought time from the Karnataka High Court till September 4 to collect information from petitioners on quarrying near the Bannerghatta National Park and to file a report before the court.
On June 26, the High Court stayed a notice issued by the Mines and Geology Department asking 15 companies to shut mining operations at the eco-sensitive zone (ESZ) near Bannerghatta National Park. The petitioners were directed by the court to meet the district officer.
Mines and Geology Director N. Prasanna Kumar said, “In this case, there were many environmental violations. The quantities that these companies had taken were high and this is not expected from even a smallest quarry holder.”
He said that the norms set by the state pollution control board were not complied with and the companies continued quarrying by repeatedly flouting environment orders.
