IIT JEE (Advanced) exam to go online from 2018

The decision was taken by the Join Admission Board who felt online exams would reduce printing mistakes in the question paper.

Chennai: The Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced), the gateway to prestigious IITs, will be conducted online from 2018 onwards. A decision on this regard was taken at the Joint Admission Board (JAB) meeting held at IIT Madras on Sunday.

“We have taken a decision that the JEE (Advanced) exam will be conducted online from 2018 onwards. There are many advantages in conducting the exam online,” said IIT Madras director and JAB chairman Bhaskar Ramamurthi.

“We have been thinking about going online for last three or four years. Earlier, it didn’t look easy as there were difficulties like a number of places where we can conduct the exam. Now, it looks feasible to conduct online exam for over two lakh candidates,” he said. Students who want to study in the top engineering institutes have to clear JEE (Main) exam to qualify for JEE Advanced. Students have the option to opt for both online and offline in JEE (Main). The Joint Admission Board also decided to conduct mock tests for the students.

Officials said online exam will reduce the printing mistakes in the question paper. Following the objections over some questions in the JEE (Advanced) exam 2017, the organising Institute of the exam, the IIT Madras has decided to award 18 bonus marks to all the students.

Many students complained that this decision has affected meritorious students. It was challenged by students in Supreme Court. Subsequently, the decision to conduct JEE advanced exam online was taken by the apex body.
