In Nilgiris, Devala records 204 mm rain

The southwest monsoon turned vigorous suddenly in the central and the western parts of Nilgiris on Wednesday evening.

OOTY: Devala in Gudalur in Western Nilgiris border recorded 204 mm rainfall and five other places in the hills here registered more than 100 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours ending 0830 hours on Thursday.

The southwest monsoon turned vigorous suddenly in the central and the western parts of Nilgiris on Wednesday evening. There was heavy downpour in Gudalur and Pandalur taluks on Wednesday evening, and continued through to the early hours on Thursday. Ooty and Kundah taluks in central Nilgiris too received good SW monsoon rains on Wednesday night.

While Devala near Gudalur recorded 204 mm rainfall on Thursday morning Gudalur bazaar registered 192 mm. Rainfall recorded in other stations (in mm) was as follows:- Naduvattam-186., Upper Bhavani-178, Avalanchee-173., Glenmorgan-103., Ooty-38., Emerlad-31, and Kundah-22. Heavy rains in Gudalur belt saw flooding in Thenvayal and Iruvayal tribal hamlets near Gudalur as overflow in the Thenvayal stream which is a tributary of the Moyar river breached its banks and inundated tribal settlements. Officials who rushed to the spot on Wednesday evening evacuated tribals in the two hamlets and shifted them to a nearby school. A couple of trees that were uprooted on the Ooty-Kundah road paralyzed traffic for about an hour on Thursday early morning.
