Kozhikode: Food raid revelations have public in shock

Many hotels found to serve old, stinking food with worms in it.

Kozhikode: The citizenry is very much worried about the exposure that many city hotels served food many days old and some were with worms and stench.

Known for its endearing food courts across the town with a broad range of menu including the local varieties, many prefer to eat food here, and they even drive into the city from far off corners just to have a taste of the Malabari cuisine.

“The news was very much shocking to me,” said Nihal Naser, who works with merchant navy.

“I used to eat from some of those food corners. Though only one or two hotels are doing such ugly things, it would affect the reputed brands serving the best. Money of each person is valuable, and the state government should ensure justice for the foodies.”

Many of the DC readers opined that the existing food safety laws lack teeth to curb such trends. They demand the city corporation to take a proactive role by imposing strict rules to ensure healthy food.

P.T.S. Unni, former president of Calicut Chamber of Commerce, said such hotels and restaurants should be closed down on the spot.

“Let them correct themselves and apply afresh,” he told DC.

“A committee constituted at the local level with the people’s representatives as its head should have additional powers to monitor the health and operational conditions of these restaurants.”

The spreading of deadly diseases is another issue everybody is concerned. Cholera has already reported in Malappuram and diphtheria is spreading though slowly.

“Instead of taking action after one died after taking food, a prior action may save many from death,” said Mr Unni.
