National Investigation Agency raids in Ramnad, Tiruvarur

A few cell phones and some documents were said to have seized in the raids in this district, the sources added.

Rameshwaram: In a surprise development, sleuths of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) raided residences of select Muslim families in Keelakarai and Devipattinam in Ramanathapuram dist on Monday. The raids were said to be part of NIA’s investigations into certain cases allegedly involving people with ‘ISIS links’ and plotting to act against India and also release some ‘Jihadists’ from prison, sources said.

Cases have been filed against eight persons in this regard and the raids in ten places including two in Ramanathapuram district today were part of those investigations, sources said. A few cell phones and some documents were said to have seized in the raids in this district, the sources added.

In Tiruvarur dist, a police team of NIA conducted surprise raids at the houses of Shajith Ahamed, Imthiyaz Ahamed, and Rizwan in Muthupettai on Monday. They had been arrested and now on bail in connection with the murder of a Hindu Munnani activist, at Keelakarai in Ramanathapuram during 2018, it may be recalled.
