Vijayawada: Sanitation worker dies after mishap in manhole

He was found dead after an 8-hour search.

Vijayawada: A sanitation worker, who went missing after entering a 50-feet manhole to clear a blocked sewer, was found dead after an 8-hour search.
He fell into the sump after the bottom of the manhole gave way. His body was found floating at Vambe Colony, H Block. To remove the blockage, the outsourced emp-loyee, Vallepu Gangara-ju, entered the manhole with a ladder support. As per instructions, he has tried to remove the small wall in the manhole, so that the blockage could be cleared. Due to his weight and the weight of ladder, the bottom of the manhole collapsed and he fell do-wn in the deep sewage.

The incident happened at around 3.30 pm. The staff and the officials, including the commissioner conducted the search. They dug the pipeline through 10 metres by removing all the garbage-like material, which was almost 40 feet high. The body of Gangaraju was recovered after an 8-hour search operation.

Gangaraju lived in Singhnagar, and had three children, all below the age of 10. Mr Vishnu, CPM Vijay-awada Central secretary told this newspaper, “Actually, the Supreme Court has asked us not to use manpower to get into manholes, and only machinery was to be used for this purpose. But, the corporation still continued using manpower. This man was also an outsourced emp-loyee. We request the co-rporation to henceforth, always use machinery for this purpose.” Last year in the month of March, at Bhavanipuram, in an incident, two workers had died.
