Medical Council of India inspects Manjeri Medical College

Last year, the MCI had denied approval for the course which was granted later after resolving the issues.

Malappuram: A three-member panel of the Medical Council of India (MCI) inspected the facilities at the Government Medical College in Manjeri on Tuesday for granting approval for admissions to 100 seats of the sixth MBBS batch. Last year, the MCI had denied approval for the course which was granted later after resolving the issues. The panel is expected to submit its report to the MCI within a month. The team was led by coordinator Dr. G.V. Prakash, Dr. M.P Sudhanshu and Dr. B.Y. Yuvraj.

The panel took stock of the number of patients in outpatient and inpatient departments and the facilities of lab, ward and operation theatres in various departments. “There is no dearth of teaching and non- teaching staff now and tender process for the construction of new hostel building has already begun,” principal Dr. M.P. Shashi said. The MCI team cited only some defects which will not affect the course approval, he said.

The MCI had last year found fault with lack of doctors and staffers, inadequate infrastructure and other issues. The government immediately appointed 28 doctors and took several corrective measures. Eventually, the MCI gave the approval.
