Sabarimala: Marry Sweety's attempt ended at Pampa

Clad in a black churidar and cloth satchel slung from the shoulder, she said she was a Gulf-returnee having a diploma in journalism.

Pampa: While the news of two women trekking to Sabarimala spread, another woman, Mary Sweety, 46, from Kazhakkoottam, Thiruvananthapuram, who had no Irumudikettu, came to Pampa to go to Sabarimala. But she was forced return as the police promised no escort.

Clad in a black churidar and cloth satchel slung from the shoulder, she said she was a Gulf-returnee having a diploma in journalism.

She said she believed in all religions and had experience of trekking to Malayatoor church many a time. A widow and mother of a 20-year-old girl, she also claimed that she had observed strict penance.

She claimed, “a telepathic call” had awakened her and the desire to see Ayyappa had grown for the last couple of years. Responding to the queries about Irumudikettu, she said she could bear so much weight while trekking and planned to buy one at Sannidhanam.

She also said if she were allowed she would be able to trek alone, which the police turned down due to security concerns.

According to Ms Sweety, she had visited many temples and churches across the world. She wanted to see Ayyappa today itself as Navratri rituals are going on. But she changed her mind after a group of protesters surrounded her chanting 'Swamy Saranam' and left the scene in a police vehicle.
