Kanimozhi clicks airport leaks

The airport officials had placed plastic tubs to prevent the water from messing up the floor.

Chennai: DMK MP Kanimozhi, on her way to Delhi on Thursday, was shocked to see the roof of the Chennai airport leaking due to rain. The airport officials had placed plastic tubs to prevent the water from messing up the floor.

Promptly, she took some pictures on her mobile phone and posted them on twitter, along with a damning note.

“First it was the ceiling falling. Now the roof has turned into showers. Plastic containers have been placed to collect the water dripping from above due to rains”, said Kanimozhi in her tweet along with the photograph posted. She was obviously referring to the several incidents of the glass panes in the doors and windows crashing, and bits of cement plastering coming off the walls and ceiling in some parts in the past.

Up to December 2018, there were 69 incidents of glass panels falling in five years since modernization at a cost in excess of Rs 2,000 crore. Needless to say the MP's tweet sent the airport authorities into a tizzy. Repair workers were quickly dispatched to check the roof and set things right at top speed. “It was not a shower, nothing of that sort; just some drops of water from the rain that leaked at a couple of spots in the roof”, said Airport Director S Sreekumar.

“The roof on the second floor is made of metal sheets and not cement concrete. There could be some minor damage in a couple of places and that caused this minor leaking. It was brought to my notice yesterday (Wednesday) and we
started the repairing at once. Things will be set right completely in a day or two”, Sreekumar told DC, adding, “Passengers need not get worried; not at all”.
