Cauvery row: Kannada Okkoota activists block traffic, arrested

The police, however, foiled their attempt by detaining the leaders.

BENGALURU: Over 500 members of the Kannada Okkoota led by Vatal Nagaraj tried to observe a bandh on the Karnataka-Tamil Nadu border by obstructing vehicle movement between the two states at Attibele on Monday. The police, however, foiled their attempt by detaining the leaders.

In a protest against the Tamil Nadu government and demanding intervention of the Prime Minister on the Cauvery issue, the agitators took out a rally in an open vehicle from Attibele towards the toll collection plaza at the border.

The Bengaluru Rural police, who had made massive security arrangements, stopped the agitators and took nearly 50 people, including the leaders, into preventive custody midway.

Mr Vatal Nagaraj said that the Kannada outfits will not stop the protests until justice is done. “Whenever Jayalalithaa is the Chief Minister or Tamil Nadu, she makes it a point to trouble Karnataka. We condemn this attitude.

Despite repeated requests, the Prime Minister is not showing any interest in resolving the issue. We demand him to intervene in the matter immediately,” he said. Kannada outfit leaders Sa.Ra. Govindu, K.R. Kumar, Shivaramegowda, Praveen Kumar Shetty, H.V. Girish Gowda and others took part in the protests.
