Belagavi must be split for its growth: Sudarshan

He urged the Centre to draw up an inter-state water policy to resolve disputes like Cauvery and Mahadayi.

Belagavi: Belagavi, the biggest district in the state, should be divided for its effective development in all sectors, said former chairman of the Legislative Council V.R. Sudarshan.

With a vast geographical area having 18 assembly segments and two parliamentary constituencies, Belagavi should be split into two districts for administrative convinience, he felt. At a press conference here, Mr Sudarshan said smaller districts would help the government in responding to people's problems effectively besides streamlining the administration.

He urged the Centre to draw up an inter-state water policy to resolve disputes like Cauvery and Mahadayi and said PM Narendra Modi should intervene to help find a lasting solution to both disputes. He endorsed the views of former PM H.D. Deve Gowda that the state's counsel for the Cauvery row, Fali Nariman was an able lawyer and objected to his credibility being questioned.

The state may have suffered a setback in the Cauvery dispute, but it was still possible to take up the case more effectively in the Supreme Court to apprise judges about Karnataka's problems, he said.
