Eminence tag won't make courses expensive: Manipal VC Dr H Vinod Bhat

At present MAHE campuses function at Mangaluru, Bengaluru, Dubai and Malaysia, apart from the home education township at Manipal, Udupi.

BENGALURU: After being selected as an Institution of Eminence (IoE) by the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development, Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) will work towards ensuring that no meritorious student is denied admission to any course, irrespective of his/her ability to pay the prescribed fee. In a chat with Deccan Chronicle on Thursday, MAHE Vice-Chancellor (VC) Dr H. Vinod Bhat confirmed the same adding that no fee will be hiked for any programme unlike other IoE counterparts.

“No meritorious student will be denied admission to any course, irrespective of his/her ability to pay the prescribed fee. With enhanced endowment policies and an inclusive approach, the varsity is on its pathway towards ensuring only 50% of its revenue is generated from tuition fee in near future,” he elaborated. The rest would be met from research, philanthropy, endowments and from the corpus the varsity has created over the years. This is part of the 15-year roadmap strategized by the varsity to enhance its academics, research, social outreach and other aspects, he added.

While MAHE is one among the three private institutions in the country to be selected for the IoE tag, it has to be noted that the step is commendable as no financial assistance will be provided to them, unlike Rs 1,000 crore being granted to the selected public institutions. At present MAHE campuses function at Mangaluru, Bengaluru, Dubai and Malaysia, apart from the home education township at Manipal, Udupi.

“In the next three years, our new independent campuses will come up at Jamshedpur, Kalutara (Colombo, Sri Lanka) and at Jakkur in Bengaluru. While the 135-acre Sri Lanka campus will offer engineering, life sciences, media, commerce and arts-related courses to 3,500 students, the new campus at Bengaluru will offer new domains such as law, design, systems biology, data analytics. At Jamshedpur, our proposed campus will for be an exclusive medical college to begin with,” Dr Bhat added.

In their pursuit towards becoming a world class institution, the prime potential considered by MHRD in the selection of IoEs, MAHE is confident of leading the race from India as they claim they are the only comprehensive institution among the top six featured on the current list. "Our expertise and academic command over health sciences domain as well is an added advantaged MAHE has over others," he explained. The other institutes given the IoE tag include Indian Institute of Science (IISc), IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, BITS Pilani and the yet-to-be-established Jio Institute.
