Kakinada: Heavy rains hit power supply hit due to rains

Power has been out since Wednesday night and officials are trying to restore supply by relocating power poles.

Kakinada: The waters of Bay of Bengal remained very rough near Uppada in Kakinada coast. Officials stopped the traffic from Kakinada-Uppada-Addaripet beach road. Five huts were washed away into the sea at Konapapapet village in U. Kothapalli mandal.

Subbampet, Mayapatnam and nearby villages remained inundated and residents were forced out of their homes due to water damage. The fishermen are moving their boats to safer places as the boats have been affected by the rough weather in the sea.

Port officials hit the alarm and cargo operations in the anchorage port have been stalled with authorities warning port workers and shipping traders not to handle any cargo on the vessels in the sea. Meanwhile, heavy rains in Kakinada disrupted power in the region and many trees were uprooted and the power lines were snapped.

The APTRANSCO officials say they were working round the clock to restore supply as several feeders had been damaged. With the met office predicting that cyclone Roanu will intensify into a severe cyclonic storm, the Andhra Pradesh Government was also taking all measures to counter it.

Deputy chief minister and Home Minister, Nimmakayala China Rajappa, said five teams from the National Disaster Response Force have been deployed in the state for rescue operations, if necessary. He said two NDRF teams at Rajahmundry and Amalapuram and one at Kakinada have been deployed.

District Collector, H.Arunkumar, said all arrangements were being made to evacuate people from low lying areas and cyclone shelters — stocked with essential supplies — were being prepped to handle those affected. The toll free number (1800425377) has also been opened in the collector’s office here.
