Chennai: The shifting of no-nonsense additional director general of police K. Jayanth Murali heading the CB-CID created a fresh spell of controversy on Thursday with the Opposition parties crying foul.
The principal Opposition party DMK and the PMK alleged that the government was in haste trying to cover up the sex-for-marks scandal being investigated by the CB-CID only to protect state officials in which the name of TN Governor Banwarilal Purohit is also dragged in.
DMK leader M.K. Stalin on Thursday reiterated his party’s stand that the governor has to be called back by the centre and alleged that the state was trying all its best to cover up the issues in which state top brass are involved.
“Who is involved in this case and who is behind it? If this has to be ascertained, and for the truth to emerge, the probe has to be done by the CBI under the supervision of the high court,” Stalin said.
The events had brought disrepute to the entire state of Tamil Nadu and there is a need for an effective CBI probe to bring out the truth, Stalin told reporters admitting that the current investigations by the CB-CID and the one man commission formed by the Raj Bhavan are an eyewash aimed to protect the wrongdoers.
PMK founder Dr Ramadoss questioned the timing of a top official being transferred within 24 hours after the controversial Nirmala Devi case was handed over to CB-CID.
“A conspiracy is on to bury this case,” Dr S. Ramadoss said and added that the transfer of the senior official with integrity was shocking. “All the bigwigs in the sexual scandal can be exposed only by a CBI probe and this is essential for the parents in Tamil Nadu to send their children to schools and colleges without fear,” he said.
It may be noted that on April 16 the state police arrested Aruppukottai-based Devanga College assistant professor Nirmala Devi for attempting to lure students into prostitution promising marks and money.
The case which went viral after an audio leak was transferred to CB-CID by DGP T.K. Rajendran and the next development in the case was the transfer of Jayanth Murali as ADGP vigilance and anti-corruption.
