BBMP's compost santhe a big draw

They were selling wares like compost making pots, leaf shredding machines, vertical garden kit, biogas units and liquid fertilisers.

Bengaluru: BBMP’s ‘compost santhe’ at Sanjay Nagar on Sunday drew a good response with people curious to know about the various techniques of composting and to shop for the required equipment.

The sante was in response to an assurance given by the civic body that it would buy compost from citizens in order to reduce the quantum of garbage being collected in the city.

There were 30 stalls at the venue at Boulevard Park. They were selling wares like compost making pots, leaf shredding machines, vertical garden kit, biogas units and liquid fertilisers.

"The mela is really helpful. At my home, I compost the household wastes by putting it in a pot mixed with mud. But something was amiss,” said Vasan, a visitor. "From one of the stalls I got to know that there was no need of mud, but I need to add coco peat to the waste and compost will be ready in a month's time."

Kousalya, a resident of Sanjay Nagar, said "I know how to compost waste. But what to do with the compost? I have come here to buy equipment to grow veggies for my house." She hoped to set up a roof garden and save on buying vegetables.

Mayor G. Padmavathi, who inaugurated the santé, such events should be organised at other places across the city.

"If residents of Sanjaynagar can convert waste to compost, why can't the residents of other areas do the same?" she added.
