Bengaluru: Woman techie jumps to death in Whitefield

Took extreme step after allegedly being harassed by relatives over property dispute.

Bengaluru: A 30-year-old software engineer ended her life by jumping from the fifth floor of her office in EOIZ Industrial Area in Whitefield police station limits on Thursday morning. Police suspect that depression and litigation over property may have led her to take the extreme step.

The deceased has been identified as Shobha Lakshmi Narayan. Hailing from Mandya district, she was living with her mother in Mahalakshmi Layout. She was working as Quality Assurance Engineer in a private company for the last four years.

According to the police, Shobha reached the office around 7.45 am on Thursday. After logging in, she went straight to the terrace of the building, where there is a conference room and a cafeteria, and jumped from there. The security guard of the building, who heard the thud, rushed to see her lying in a pool of blood.

He immediately alerted the ambulance service and the police. Before the ambulance reached the spot, she had succumbed.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that Shobha was upset over property dispute and was depressed about it. She was also availing clinical help for depression and this could have led her to take the hasty step. She was carrying books related to stress management and depression,” a senior police officer said.

However, Shobha’s relatives alleged that some of the relatives were to be blamed for the incident. “She was being harassed constantly by her relatives, who had property dispute with her. She was fed up of attending court hearing related to the dispute from the last several years,” said Mahesh, Shobha’s relative.

A case of unnatural death has been registered in Whitefield police station in this connection.
