Rural to urban: JD(S) plans a big makeover

The leaders had a free and frank discussion on the strengths and weaknesses of the party.

Bengaluru: In a bid to make its presence felt more in Bengaluru Urban and Rural districts in the 2018 Assembly polls, a meeting of senior Janata Dal (secular ) was held here on Sunday.

The meeting was presided over by State JD(S) President H.D. Kumaraswamy.

The leaders had a free and frank discussion on the strengths and weaknesses of the party especially in Bengaluru Urban and Rural districts which have 28 Assembly seats together. They opined that the party had to remake its image from rural to urban in order to woo the city voters .

The party had to focus more on Bengaluru related issues such as the controversial steel bridge construction and also involve itself in citizen forums to get nearer to the urban electorate .

Mr Kumaraswamy said that his coalition government in 2006-07 had launched many schemes for development of Bengaluru city but could not complete the process due to change in government . Party workers had to speak about the performance of his government and also about the plans to improve living standards in the city. Like BJP and Congress which strike a chord with techie voters, the JD(S) workers also need to have programmes to influence these voters, he said.

The leaders opined that the party had to select good candidates for all 28 Assembly segments to give a good fight to other parties. It was a must for the party to win the maximum seats in Bengaluru to improve its tally. All differences among leaders must be resolved before the poll dates were announced , they added.
