Tamil Nadu: Expect mild rains, but not pleasant weather

However, pleasant weather may elude in the next few days, as fierce surface winds are obstructing movement of sea breeze.

Chennai: The withdrawal of the southwest monsoon would be slow, as weather models indicate the formation of at least two low pressures in the next 10 days, signalling more rains to the west coast, including Tamil Nadu.

However, pleasant weather may elude in the next few days, as fierce surface winds are obstructing movement of sea breeze. According to officials of the Regional Meteorological Centre, monsoon is active over south Interior and coastal Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. “There is also an upper air circulation over North Bay of Bengal which is the cause of occasional showers and cloud cover in Chennai and other adjoining places,” said a Met department official.

Even though weather stations in Chennai recorded no abnormal temperature, the temperature has been harsh, as it is hovering around 35 degrees Celsius. Reasoning the scenario, weather blogger, K Srikanth said: “Surface winds over the central parts of Tamil Nadu could gust up to 40 km per hour creating extremely blustery conditions over most parts of the state.

Chennai could also see extremely windy conditions with strong surface level winds from the West almost right through the day making it difficult for the sea breeze to make any movement over the coast.”

Decline in temperature is directly proportional to the movement of the sea breeze. “Weather models show a possibility of a low pressure on September 22, which would give at least two days of rainfall in the state. Though the low pressure will have a direct influence on Andhra, Tamil Nadu would also be fruitful, in the rainfall front,” Srikanth said. Pleasant weather can be expected only when the easterlies commence, he said.
