Violence in Kannur continues

Police arrests 60 people in preventive detention.

Kannur: Violence continued in Thalassery and nearby areas on Sunday despite political parties agreeing to maintain peace at a meeting convened by the police on Saturday.

In the early morning, unidentified persons stoned CPM worker Manikoth Subin’s house and Moozhikkara Mulloli Gopalan Memorial building damaging windowpanes.

It is learnt that the police had taken more than 60 people in preventive detention to control the spread of violence.

The series of attacks started Friday night with the assault on BJP worker Rijil’s house at Moolikkara followed by four more with crude bombs and stones in which five were wounded and admitted to hospital.

After the BJP MPs had visited the houses of their workers killed or injured in alleged CPM violence, there were large-scale attacks on CPM workers’ homes including Thalassery municipal councillor M.K Vijayan’s. At the emergency peace meeting convened by Thalassery DySP Prince Abraham, the political parties had decided to stop violence and to hold review meetings every month. Addressing reporters after his visit to their houses, CPM district secretary P. Jayarajan said the visit of BJP MPs was to encourage RSS workers to attack his people and properties.

“They attacked seven homes in Kodiyeri. The BJP MPs visited Kottayampoyil where an RSS worker was killed while making country bombs and also made provocative statements. These are examples of RSS's hidden agenda to sabotage peace,” he alleged.
