Fresh landslides near Madikeri trigger panic

A number of villages still remain cut off from the taluk centre.

Bengaluru: Even as rescue and relief operation have been stepped up in rain and flood- hit Kodagu, reports of fresh landslides in Jodupala and Madenadu villages triggered panic among people on Saturday.

To make things worse, rumours about possible tremors in the district led to more confusion until the deputy commissioner denied them and advised people to remain calm.

Meanwhile, according to unconfirmed reports, two dead bodies have been recovered under the heaps of silt deposited by the landslides. They are believed to be two of the six persons who went missing three days ago after a hillock slid in Madikeri taluk.

Sources said the entire Kandanakolli village was buried under silt after the massive landslides of three days ago. A number of villages still remain cut off from the taluk centre.

The Madras Sappers and Dogra Regiment personnel, who arrived in military vehicles to rescue the stranded, had to stop and walk some distance due to the uneven roads. People, who were rescued and shifted to the gruel centres, were worried about their missing family members and pleaded with the district authorities to trace them. The lack of mobile connectivity, only fanned their fears.

Besides the rescue and relief operation, the immediate task before the government is to carry out temporary repair of all roads to help people getto safety.
